Greg and Jake, two keen Kiwi fishermen, built Reel NZ because they were sick of seeing the same problems go unsolved. Here's what they set out to fix.
There's no home for recreational fishers.
NZ has roughly 600,000 recreational fishers, but no unified community. That gap creates real problems — and nobody was fixing them.
Knowledge gets lost.
Decades of fishing knowledge sits locked in people's heads. The best tips — what's biting where, which techniques work, how species behave — get passed between mates at the ramp and then disappear. There's nowhere to capture or share it with the wider community, so every generation starts from scratch.
No voice when it matters.
When decisions are made about recreational fishing regulations and policies, there's no organised way for the community to engage, contribute, or be heard. 600,000 fishers and no collective voice — that's not right.
The data is rubbish.
Current catch data relies on small-sample ramp surveys and MPI questionnaires that are inaccurate at best. Worse — the results are never shared back with the fishing community who actually need it. We're making decisions about our fisheries based on guesswork.
So we built Reel NZ.
